Good Call Germay (Seriousness Level: Guarded)

For some reason, Germany has always scared me a little bit. I guess it was the two World Wars and big wall that used to split Berlin in two. I guess Hitler plays in part in that as well. Anyway, I read a Reuters story that is beginning to change my opinion. They laid the law down on somebody else that gives me the creeps: Tom Cruise.

"Germany does not recognize Scientology as a religion; seeing it as a cult masquerading as a church to make money. Scientologists reject this view."
- Full Story

So a thumbs up to Deutschland, for realizing that Oktoberfest is more of a religion than something created by somebody named L. Ron. Isn't that the guy's name from Lord of the Rings?

Um, welcome to last year. Don't you remember that Germany wouldn't let Tom Cruise make that WW2 film there? They didn't want a scientologist playing a German hero. Have Guiliana Rancic and Ryan Seacrest taught you nothing?

I was very interested in seeing that the cofounder of one of the top ten "Up and Coming" Blogs of 2007 approves of your site.

Keep up the good work.

Be carefull. Germany had some fairly radical opinions of the Jewish faith at one point. As goofy as Tom and the Scientologists might be freedom of religion is a cornerstone of an enlightened society. Just ask Mitt Romney.

I found your blog through D and F - yours is good too.

Thanks for the comments guys. Lance, welcome to the Adams Family. It's good to have you aboard.

I should have been a little more specific. I think freedom of religion is of the utmost importance. Even though I disagree with every religion save one, people have to be given to opportunity to think how they want. The only reason I singled out Scientology is because I believe they are a glorified pyramid scheme hiding under religion.

They force their people to pay for classes and membership fees to achieve higher levels within the organization. It’s like a gym membership. They are a self-help program that has a lot of people with great success stories.

I’m fine with people practicing/believing in Scientology as should governments; I just don’t think they should get the same tax breaks as religious groups. And I believe their use of a modified cross as their logo is offensive at best.
